Here in Blenheim, a group of women are working to empower other women across the globe.
Two of those women, Lynley McGowan and Katrina Smith work for WK, and have been using some of their community service hours to contribute to the cause for the past seven years.
Marlborough’s Zonta Club was established in Marlborough in late 1994, and foundation member Bridget Orman says its been working to advocate for women and gender equality ever since.
“We fundraise to support causes that will support and promote things for women, to allow them to achieve their full potential,” she says.
Katrina recently left her role as treasurer with the club to tackle a new challenge on the membership committee of the club.
Her role as treasurer required her to complete the annual accounts for the club, something she was thankful to have the WK community hours to put towards.
“I enjoy the fellowship and support Zonta gives in the community, and the scholarships and encouragement Zonta give to young women. I also really enjoy that I have been able to share the skills I have learnt over the years working at WK and being able to help an organisation that promotes good values and supports the community,” she says.
Made up of four working committees, Bridget says the support of members like Lynley and Katrina helps them to achieve their aims both locally and internationally.
“They assist in lots of generous ways,” she says.
As part of the PR committee, Lynley’s involvement includes arranging speakers and presentations for monthly meetings, organising publicity for fundraising activities, and working with the other three committees towards an overall goal.
“Zonta gives me the opportunity to enjoy the company of other members, and being able to contribute to our causes which enables us to help and promote the lives of other women in the community and overseas,” Lynley says.
“I am very privileged that WK encourages community involvement and supports me with allowing me time to do this.”
This weekend, the Marlborough Zonta club will host the annual area meeting for all clubs from Christchurch through to Blenheim, for which WK is part of the sponsorship.
